Mandarin tones — am I supposed to drill them or do they come from listening?

80 hours of input and my listening is way ahead of my speaking, which I'm told is normal and good. But tones still scare me. Do the people further along drill tones separately, or did enough listening just tune your ear until they stopped feeling like a minefield?

Listening did most of it for me in other languages — your ear tunes to contrasts you hear constantly. A little focused tone-pair practice early doesn't hurt, but don't turn it into a months-long drill. Hear them in real sentences and they stop feeling like a minefield.

Okay, that matches what's happening — my listening is way ahead and tones are slowly clicking from input. Going to trust the ear and stop stressing the drills.
