What it is

This is your training plan for getting from zero to comfortable in Japanese the input-first way — the same way every fluent learner who didn't hate the process actually did it. It covers the three things that make Japanese feel intimidating (the writing systems, the kanji mountain, the "alien" grammar) and folds them into a single program built around one engine: massive amounts of understandable Japanese.

Japanese uses three scripts at once. Hiragana (the curvy one) handles grammar — particles, verb endings, native words. Katakana (the angular one) handles loanwords (コーヒー = kōhī, coffee) and emphasis. Kanji are the Chinese-derived characters that carry meaning (日 = sun/day, 本 = origin/book → 日本 = Japan). You don't "memorize the dictionary." You learn to recognize kanji in context, the way you recognize faces — through repeated exposure, not flashcard grinding alone.

The grammar that scares beginners — Subject-Object-Verb order, particles (は wa, が ga, を o), no plurals, no articles, politeness levels — is exactly the stuff your brain is built to absorb implicitly when you get enough input. You will never consciously juggle は vs が in real time. Nobody does. You'll just feel which one is right, eventually, after hearing them a few thousand times. That's the whole game. The honest part: Japanese is a Category IV/V language for English speakers per the U.S. Foreign Service Institute (FSI), which estimates ~2,200 class hours to professional working proficiency — among the longest of any language. That's not a curse; it's a clock. Show up daily, enjoy the reps, and the clock runs.

The evidence

The backbone is Stephen Krashen's Input Hypothesis: we acquire language by understanding messages slightly beyond our current level (i+1), not by studying rules. His Affective Filter hypothesis adds that stress and forced output choke acquisition — relevant for a language where beginners panic about politeness mistakes. Krashen also documented the Silent Period: a natural stretch where comprehension races ahead of speech. With Japanese this period is real and long, and that's fine.

On vocabulary, Paul Nation's research is the load-bearing wall. Knowing the ~2,000 most frequent word families gets you ~80%+ coverage of everyday text; you need recognition of thousands more for comfortable reading. Nation's work shows vocabulary is best learned in context with repeated meaningful encounters — which is exactly what immersion delivers — not from isolated lists. See Vocabulary Acquisition.

For making memory stick, Hermann Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve explains why you forget a kanji a day after seeing it once, and why spaced repetition — reviewing right before you'd forget — is so efficient. What the evidence does not support: grinding kanji in isolation with zero context, drilling grammar tables for fluency, or "speak from day one" forcing output before you have anything to say. Those produce people who can recite rules and freeze in conversation. The research is consistent — comprehension first, production later, reps forever.

How to actually use it

Think of it as a training program with phases. You don't skip leg day, but you don't max-bench on week one either.

Phase 0 — Kana (Week 1-2). Learn hiragana, then katakana. This is the one thing you brute-force, because it's small and pays off forever. Use Tofugu's mnemonic guides or the Dr. Moku app, 20 minutes a day, and read everything aloud. Goal: read kana without translating. Done. Never look at romaji again — it rots your pronunciation.

Phase 1 — Foundations (Month 1-3). Now build a tiny base so input isn't pure noise. Run a starter course — Pimsleur or Assimil Japanese — for the rhythm and core sentence patterns (see The Pimsleur Method and The Assimil Method). Simultaneously start an SRS deck for the first ~1,000 frequent words and high-frequency kanji (see Anki: The Complete Guide). Keep grammar light — read one beginner reference once for the map, don't memorize it.

Phase 2 — Comprehensible input (Month 2 onward, forever). This is the actual program. Start watching/listening to Japanese you can mostly follow. Beginner comprehensible input YouTube channels (search "Comprehensible Japanese" / "Nihongo con Teppei" / "Japanese with Shun") are gold — they use simple language and visuals so you understand from day one. Stack reps daily. As you grow, climb to graded readers, then native podcasts, anime, dramas, manga, and games. See Finding Comprehensible Input and Comprehensible Input Platforms.

Phase 3 — Sentence mining + reading (Month 4+). When watching with subtitles, use Language Reactor to pause, see word meanings, and pull whole sentences into Anki. This is where kanji recognition compounds: you stop "studying" them and just start reading.

Phase 4 — Output emerges (whenever you're ready, not before). After hundreds of hours of input, words start falling out of your mouth.
